Trees Near Power Lines: Who Handles What

← Resources

OG&E, co-ops, Edmond Electric, and calling 811.

Never touch a tree, limb or ladder that is in contact with a power line. Stay at least 10 feet away and assume the line is energized. Oklahoma law and OSHA rules restrict work within 10 feet of high-voltage overhead lines to qualified workers.

Who maintains what (general guidance)

  • Primary lines along poles: your utility (OG&E, Edmond Electric, or a cooperative like Oklahoma Electric Cooperative) generally handles clearance on its system.
  • The service drop from the pole to your house: trimming around it is often the homeowner's responsibility. Utilities can usually disconnect service temporarily so a crew can work safely — call your utility to confirm its policy.

Before digging or grinding stumps

Call 811 (OKIE811, Oklahoma's one-call system) at least 48 hours before digging so buried gas, electric and fiber lines are marked. It's free.
